While the L may give desired results, the D may cause problems - or visa versa depending on the case. Here's an example...I recently came across a popular brand of skin care, advertising a mini-face lift with "amazing results"??. What's up with that? Corn Starch?

Nature often discriminates between chiral forms of small molecules, too, and what is a medicine on the one hand can be a poison on the other".
One example of this is Thalidomide.
Thalidomide, which was given to pregnant women as a sedative and anti-nausea drug in the 1950s, turned out to produce debilitating birth defects such as missing limbs. But, in fact, only one enantiomer of the molecule is responsible for these effects. Because they didn't in those days test [left and right handed molecules] separately, they didn't find out that [one form of] the drug was good for helping pregnant women sleep and helped to prevent morning-sickness, while the other one was causing birth defects. That would have been a case where, if this were available, it might have been less tragic." Sharpless is careful to point out that even this case is not simple, as the two forms of the molecule interconvert slightly in the body.
"This Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde persona of different handedness of the same molecule is true of other substances as well. For example, a left-handed molecule makes up the active ingredient in the drug Ethambutol, used to treat Tuberculosis. Its right-handed counterpart can cause blindness. The left-handed form of Penicillamine has anti-arthritic properties, while its right-handed form is extremely toxic".
"Even when one hand of a molecule appears to be neutral, it is often prudent to leave it out of a drug. Not only can the dosage be halved in this manner, but long-term safety risks, some that may not appear for generations, can be reduced. Sharpless notes, "You've got to keep the chemicals down as much as possible" More targeted drugs is what it is all about."

Study: Red Wine Molecule Shown to Extend Life

Molecules found in red wine, peanuts and other products of the plant world have for the first time been shown to mimic the life-extending effects of calorie restriction, a finding that could help researchers develop drugs that lengthen life and prevent or treat aging-related diseases. Researchers say that one of the molecules, a compound known as Resveratrol, was shown in a study to extend the life span of yeast cells by up to 80 percent. Resveratrol exists naturally in grapes and red wine.
David Sinclair, an assistant professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the study, said he has become more "enthusiastic" about the purported health benefits of red wine since his research began, and that experts who have reviewed his findings have had a similar response. "Not many people know about it yet, but those who do have almost invariably changed their drinking habits, that is, they drink more red wine," he told Reuters. The molecules that were shown to extend life in yeast belong to a family of compounds known as polyphenols. These include Resveratrol, which is already thought to make red wine healthy in moderate amounts.
Sinclair said the latest study may help explain why moderate consumption of red wine has been linked to lower incidence of heart disease and why Resveratrol prevents cancer in mice. "We're connecting many dots with this study," he said. Scientists have known for decades that putting organisms on a calorie-restricted diet dramatically reduces the incidence of age-related illnesses such as cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease. In the 1990s, research showed that single genes can control how fast organisms age. Because of that, scientists have been racing to find ways of manipulating those genes.
Sinclair and his team have been looking for what he calls the Holy Grail of aging research: molecules that activate the enzymes that in turn influence the genes that regulate aging. Now, they say, they have found those molecules. Sinclair's team partnered with BIOMOL, a Pennsylvania company, to screen thousands of molecules to see which ones might activate the enzymes. Not only did they find a group of 18 molecules that fit the bill -- Resveratrol being just one -- but all of them came from plants and were produced in response to harsh environmental conditions like drought.
"We think we know why these plants make these molecules. We think it's part of their own defense response, and we also believe that animals and fungi that live on the plants can pick up on these clues," he said. To illustrate that theory, Sinclair noted that red wines from regions with harsher growing conditions -- Spain, Chile, Argentina and Australia -- contain more Resveratrol than those produced where grapes are not highly stressed or dehydrated.

Now there is evidence that a substance called Octyl Methoxycinnamate (OMC) used as a UVB filter in 90% of sunscreens worldwide may itself be toxic. Sircuit Cosmeceuticals never formulates with OMC. Are Sunscreens Killing the Coral Reefs?
Scientists have reported that sunscreen may be to blame for dying coral reefs. In the January 2008 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, it is reported that four common sunscreen ingredients activate viruses that kill an algae that feeds coral through photosynthesis. Without the algae, the coral turns white and dies.
The four chemicals in question are octinoxate, oxybenzone and 4-methlybenzylidene camphor and butylparaben. According to the scientists, nearly 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen wash off swimmers every year. Scientists at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Italy estimates 10% of coral reefs worldwide are threatened by sunscreen-induced bleaching.
To avoid possibly damaging coral reefs, scientists are recommending that sunscreen users choose a sunscreen with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as active ingredients. They also recommend choosing a biodegradable sunscreen whose ingredients break down in seawater, many noting that consumers should be leary of waterproof sunscreen.

These proteins interfere with cell functioning, accumulate in skin making it look wrinkly, and stiffen blood vessels. Now researchers at the Baker Institute in Melbourne, Australia have found that ACE inhibitors appear to exert their anti-aging effects by preventing the build-up of AGEs." Efficacy of Micronized Titanium Dioxide-containing compounds in protection against UVB-induced immunosuppression in humans in vivo.
Abstract : Micronized pigment-containing sunscreens may provide a good alternative to chemical sunscreens in protection against ultraviolet (UV) B-induced immunosuppression. The metal particles in these products are likely to remain on the skin surface where they can offer broadband protection for both the UVA and UVB regions. We have tested the protective capacity of three titanium dioxide (TiO2) -containing compounds in humans in vivo. The effect on sunburn cell formation has been investigated using transmission electron microscopy, while the mixed epidermal cell lymphocyte reaction (MECLR) has been used as a model for immunosuppression. Furthermore, the influence of titanium on the integrity of the stratum corneum barrier (intercellular lipids and desmosomes) has been examined using freeze fracture electron microscopy. We find that all three compounds protect against sunburn cell formation. The immunoprotection studies show that one of the three compounds does not prevent UVB-induced changes of the MECLR responses. Application of this compound without subsequent UVB irradiation also induces a significant decrease of the MECLR responses. Moreover, the same compound affects the intercellular lipid layers, and desmosomes cannot be detected. The deleterious effect of this compound is probably caused by an incomplete hydrolysis during the TiO2 synthesis. Our findings indicate that micronized pigment-containing compounds can offer good protection against short-term UVB-induced immunomodulation in humans in vivo. However, accurate screening of the synthesis of these compounds is a prerequisite for their safe use as sunscreening agents in human subjects.
